Agent Bennett had witnessed some of the darkest things people are capable of in his 15-year career.

I thought that nothing could move him anymore.

But a hiker's call about a «living skeleton» deep in the state forest he proved otherwise.

Bennett and his partner fought their way through the tangled undergrowth, far beyond any marked path.

When they finally reached the clearing, they saw it:

a dog so malnourished that it seemed almost transparent, brutally chained to an imposing pine tree.

The dirt around him was reduced to dust, every piece of soil had been scraped by the dog until it could no longer stand.

Bennett hurried closer, instinctively lifting his water bottle.

He prepared himself for a growl, a bite, even a frightened moan.

But the forest remained eerily silent.

Then, when he knelt next to the dog, he realized the truth.

The chain wasn't the worst.

Someone had taken an old, rusty wire and wound it over and over around the dog's snout.

He was so brutally squeezed that he had cut off his flesh, completely sealing his mouth.

Bennett felt reality hit him.

It wasn't about abandonment. It was deliberate cruelty.

«They didn't just leave it here», Bennett said with a broken voice, with fury in his voice.

He turned to his companion. «They closed his mouth with wire so that no one could hear him asking for help. Who does something like that?».

With trembling hands, he slowly cut the wire with his multitool.

He prepared for the dog to panic or bite him.

Instead, as soon as the wire fell, the dog simply rested its head against Bennett's chest and closed its eyes.

He didn't need to bark. I finally knew I was safe.

They took him out of the forest that same afternoon.

It's now called «Survivor» and he's recovering at the veterinary clinic, and Bennett has already filed adoption papers to take him home for good.
