My relationship with Greg lasted nine months. I wanted to give him a THOUGHTFUL BIRTHDAY PRESENT,
steering away from the usual shirt or common option.
To make it special, I created a small photo album by hand. It contained our date photos, movie ticket stubs, inside jokes, and HANDWRITTEN LOVE NOTES.
On his birthday, Greg thanked me and SIMPLY SHELVED THE BOOK in his living room.
Later, during his birthday dinner, someone asked about my present. Greg grabbed the album, waved it, and labeled it, "STRAIGHT OUTTA MIDDLE SCHOOL." Then he THREW IT IN THE TRASH. All in front of the guests.
I sat there, CHEEKS BURNING, completely numb. Greg laughed and said, "Relax, it's only a joke."
I was DEEPLY HUMILIATED. That night, I wept and the PAIN REMAINED.
The next night, we went to a small gathering hosted by Greg's best friend, Mark.
Upon arrival, Mark seemed WORRIED and unusually subdued. After a short while, he UNEXPECTEDLY STOOD UP.
He held MY SCRAPBOOK in his hand. Mark looked at Greg and asked, "Greg, does this look familiar?" ⬇️
When my fiancé threw my handmade gift in the trash and laughed about it with his friends, he thought he was being funny.
He had no idea that what he did would cost him something he wasn't expecting.
Greg and I had been dating for nine months when he proposed.
We met at a college party, and I was instantly smitten. He was charming, funny, and had this way of making me feel like I was the only girl in the room.
"You're different from other girls," he used to tell me. "You actually get my sense of humor."

I thought that was romantic. Now I realize it was probably a warning sign.
